Swift Creek Bridge Replacement & Highway 3 Realignment

McCullough Construction partnered with Caltrans District 2 to successfully complete the Swift Creek Bridge Replacement and Highway 3 Realignment Project. The project included construction of a new roadway alignment, installation of four new culverts, construction of a new two-span bridge, and removal of the existing bridge, roadway, and culverts.

Following demolition, the streambed was recontoured and new trapezoidal drainage ditches were installed to restore natural drainage patterns and improve long-term environmental performance.

The completed Swift Creek Bridge measures approximately 198 feet in length and features a 44-foot-wide deck with two 12-foot travel lanes and two 8-foot shoulders. The new bridge was constructed approximately 80 feet downstream of the original crossing, providing a safer, more resilient transportation corridor while minimizing impacts to traffic during construction.

Project Highlights

• Constructed a new 198-foot, two-span bridge with a 44-foot-wide deck
• Completed Highway 3 roadway realignment
• Installed four new drainage structures, including:
  • One 120-foot × 19-foot structural steel arch culvert with headwalls
  • One 92-foot × 8-foot × 8-foot precast concrete box culvert
  • One 84-foot × 8-foot × 6-foot precast concrete box culvert
• Excavated approximately 95,000 cubic yards of roadway material
• Constructed a 42-foot-tall, 6-foot-diameter bridge pier column
• Implemented multiple creek diversion systems to protect water quality throughout construction
• Placed approximately 4,070 tons of hot mix asphalt (HMA)
• Removed the existing bridge, roadway, and culverts while restoring the stream channel and surrounding environment
