McCullough Construction, Inc. (MCI) was awarded the Jack Peters Creek Bridge Rehabilitation Project by Caltrans District 1 to upgrade the existing Highway 1 bridge to current California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) design standards.

The project included more than 17,000 cubic yards of excavation and removal, partial demolition of the existing bridge, and widening the three-span concrete box girder bridge by 17 feet. Additional improvements included installation of new bridge rail, guardrail, concrete barriers, multiple drainage systems, and roadway grading and paving to enhance safety and long-term performance.

Construction began in June 2024 and was completed in December 2025. Despite weather-related delays and a shortened construction season, MCI successfully delivered the project while maintaining strict quality and environmental standards.

One of the project’s most significant challenges was constructing access on extremely steep 1:1 (or greater) slopes to install the concrete piles supporting two cast-in-place bridge piers. To safely perform this work, MCI designed and constructed a temporary access road, retaining wall, and temporary bridge, providing safe access for crews and equipment throughout construction.

With the bridge deck located approximately 75 feet above Jack Peters Creek, the project required careful planning and execution to meet stringent environmental regulations while minimizing impacts to the surrounding habitat.
